    ENGINEERING/QUALITY

"No matter how you turn a Supra, it comes up performance ... A pure sports car, the Supra accelerates, brakes and corners with the best of them -- oftentimes better than the best of them ... it's no doubt given other sports-car designers restless nights."

    -- Road &Track '96 Buyer's Guide

Whether you choose the normally-aspirated engine or the twin-turbo, you get a vehicle with serious racing R&D behind it -- and nothing exposes the true character of a car faster than the track.

Let's start with the 3-liter 24-valve sequentially twin-turbocharged inline-6. With 17" Z-rated tires and a lithe weight-to-power ratio of 10.7 pounds per hp, outgunning the ordinary is no challenge. By funneling power precisely through sequential twin turbochargers, it unleashes 320 hp @ 5600 rpm (315 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm) at the drop of the flag. And this year, the Getrag/Toyota 6-speed manual overdrive puts all this power in the palm of your hand.

The normally-aspirated powerplant delivers 220 hp @ 5,800 rpm (210 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpm). Its acoustic control induction system delivers low-to-high torque on demand. And its power comes from a gated intake manifold, which stays closed at low rpm and opens wide at high rpm for a grin-inducing boost without excessive fuel consumption. Add standard super-wide V-speed-rated radial tires mounted on 16" wheels, and your Supra moves from the racetrack to the road with almost liquid smoothness.

  • Twin Sequential Turbochargers: The turbochargers work in sequence: one provides quick response at low rpm, and the other ญญ already idling towards action ญญ adds its boost as the first approaches midrange. They work in tandem up to redline, leaving turbo lag and sluggishness behind.
  • Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS): A computer-controlled valve in the intake system speeds the flow of air into the engine at low rpm and allows greater airflow at high rpm.
  • DOHC And Four Valves Per Cylinder: Like drinking out of two straws instead of one, the Double-Overhead-Camshaft, four-valve-per-cylinder engine works more efficiently, producing greater horsepower and fuel economy.
  • Computer-Controlled Engine: The engine employs a sophisticated computer to precisely adjust fuel injection, ignition and other systems. It also networks with the automatic transmission computer for even smoother shifts.
  • Distributorless Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI): To improve efficiency and reliability, this system replaces moving parts of the ignition with a high voltage coil. This minimizes misfiring and power losses.
  • Air-To-Air Intercooler: The warmer the air, the less it fits into the cylinders. The Turbo's intercooler chills the compressed air between the turbochargers and the engine, feeding you even more horsepower.
  • Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission (ECT): Optional on non-turbos, Toyota's 4-speed ECT employs a computer to monitor driving conditions (speed, load, etc.) and your actions (throttle position, etc.) to maximize gear selection efficiency. It also networks with the engine computer for even smoother shifting.
  • Intelligent Automatic Transmission (ECT-i): Optional on the Turbo, the 4-speed ECT-i is Toyota's cutting edge automatic transmission. It networks with the engine computer and controls hydraulic shift pressures to maximize shifting smoothness. It even automatically adjusts for wear over time.
  • Power/Normal Shift Modes: "Normal" and "Power" modes let you choose between a sportier feel (stay in lower gears longer and downshift more readily) or maximum fuel economy (upshift sooner and downshift less readily). Note: at wide-open throttle, mode selection is bypassed for maximum performance.
  • Manual Shift Mode: To give you full control of forward gears, both automatic transmissions feature a manual shift mode at the touch of a button.
  • Rear-Wheel Drive Layout: This classic sports car drivetrain layout optimizes the responsive feel.
  • Independent Double-Wishbone Suspension: With optimal suspension geometry, each wheel reacts independently to bumps and road irregularities, resulting in exceptional ride comfort plus exhilarating handling and control.
  • Gas-Charged Shock Absorbers: Gas-pressurized shocks provide better motion dampening and less shock fatigue (more consistent action after hard use).
  • Stabilizer Bars: Front and rear stabilizer bars reduce body roll.
  • Anti-Vibration Sub-frames: Separate sub-frames in the front and rear help reduce vibration and noise while adding rigidity for more precise handling.
  • Progressive Power Rack-And-Pinion Steering: Responsive rack-and-pinion steering helps make your Supra feel taut and stable at higher speeds. The speed-sensitive power steering gives you more assist as speeds decrease for easy parking maneuvers, and less assist as speeds increase for better control.
  • Knock Control System: Knock sensors reduce detonation ("pinging") by adjusting spark plug timing, thus optimizing engine performance, fuel economy and durability under various driving conditions.
  • Rust Resistance: Most inner and outer body panels consist of rust-resistant steels coated with a zinc and iron alloy. We dip the body in a phosphate bath, to help even the most inaccessible areas resist rust. And we apply a special wax sealer to body crevices and anti-chip paint to key areas.
  • Stainless Steel Exhaust: The durable stainless steel exhaust system assists catalyst warm-up, which helps reduce emissions.
  • Turbo Engine Oil Cooler: A cooler on the Turbo lowers oil temperatures for enhanced engine durability.
  • Automatic Belt Tensioners: Automatic tensioners help keep the timing serpentine accessory belts at optimum tension for less noise and more life.
  • Corrosion Resistant Gold-Plated Electrical Connectors: Vital electrical circuits, such as those for the air bag sensors, fuel injection computer and oxygen sensor, use gold-plated terminals for optimal electrical conduction and corrosion resistance.
  • Weight-Saving Measures: We devoted extensive engineering to keeping your Supra trim:
    • Aluminum alloy front sub-frame and suspension arms
    • Hollow front and rear stabilizer bars
    • Aluminum alloy hood and sport roof
    • Hollow-core carpet fibers
    • Lightweight rear spoiler

    SAFETY

    Big power requires big safety.

The low center of gravity and optimized suspension geometry decrease dive and rear lift dramatically as you decelerate, bringing even more precision to wheel control during handling dynamics. You can change lanes with agility and -- with both front and rear stabilizer bars -- corner with exhilarating stability.

The Supra Turbo's big-surface Z-speed-rated tires are mounted on 17" wheels, and the rigid double-wishbone suspension employs aluminum alloy A-arms and cross members with twin lower lateral links and angled trailing links. What this means for you is superior control.

Should you brake, the Turbo's massive 12.6-in. diameter vented front discs provide muscular, fade-resistant stopping power. On top of this, the 4-sensor, 4-channel Anti-lock Brake System has a lateral G-sensor that fine-tunes the rear brakes during cornering.

  • Dual Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System: In a severe frontal collision, the standard dual air bags inflate to help limit the motion of your head and upper body. The entire process -- inflation, protection, deflation -- takes less than a second. You must still wear your seatbelt at all times since air bags are a supplemental restraint system that won't inflate in less severe or non frontal impacts. Do not sit or place objects close to an air bag. Do not place child seats in any front-passenger seat. The force of a deploying air bag SRS may cause serious injury. For more information and instruction on air bag SRS and child seat usage, see the Owner's Manual.
  • Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS): The 4-sensor, 3-channel ABS (4-sensor, 4 channel on Turbo) helps prevent wheels from locking up during a hard stop. When the wheels begin to lock, the computer pulses the brake pressure more rapidly than humanly possible, allowing the tires to rotate for better control. During emergency braking, you don't need to "pump the brakes" -- ABS does it for you.
  • Traction Control System (TRAC): Standard on Turbo, TRAC pulses one or both rear brakes and reduces engine power for enhanced control and less wheelspin while accelerating on most slippery surfaces. Unlike some systems, the Supra has a "defeat" switch if you desire some wheelspin, and a "snow" mode for winter weather.
  • Four-Wheel Disc Brakes With Ventilated Rotors: Ventilated disc brakes allow cooling air to pass through the disc and help prevent brake fade.
  • Spiral Vented Front Disc Brakes: To match its muscle, the Turbo gets larger diameter disc brakes with spiral-shaped vents to cool the rotors.
  • Lateral G-Sensor: This gives you greater control when you simultaneously brake and corner by fine-tuning ABS action on the rear brakes and closely matching brake pressure side-to-side.
  • Twin-Piston Front Calipers: The front disc brakes feature twin-piston calipers to apply firm, even pressure to the brake pads. Turbos use four-piston front calipers and twin-piston rear calipers for even greater braking power.
  • Three-Point Seatbelts With ALR/ELR: The Automatic Locking Retractor for all passenger positions lets you secure a baby seat without a seatbelt locking clip. The Emergency Locking Retractor allows the seatbelt to extend or retract with your movement, yet locks it during a sudden stop.
  • Halogen Headlamps: The night-piercing headlamps include separate lenses for high beams, low beams and fog lights. An "auto-off" feature prevents undesired battery drainage.
  • Crumple Zones: Body panels at the front and rear are designed to deform progressively in a collision to help absorb the impact. The corrugated steering wheel column also collapses by design in a severe collision.
  • Rigid Passenger Compartment: In your Supra, you're surrounded by a rigid structure reinforced in the floor pan, pillars and roof, plus special steel side-door impact beams.
  • Unitized Body Construction: Featuring high-strength steel in key areas, solid unibody construction helps protect you while reducing the transmission of noise, vibration and harshness into the passenger cabin.
  • Bumpers: The bumpers meet or exceed all federal requirements.
  • Laminated And Tempered Safety Glass: Throughout the Supra, these special types of glass help minimize injuries in an accident.
  • Padded Instrument Panel and Knee Bolsters
  • Two-Turn Door Locks: Two-turn door locks permit only unlocking the driver's door when the key is turned once, or all doors when the key is turned again.
  • Power Window Lock: This disables the passenger windows, preventing small children from inadvertently opening one.
  • Anti-Lockout Power Locks: This prevents the doors from being locked if the key is in the ignition and the engine is on.
  • Theft Deterrent System: Standard in every Supra, TDS comes with a security light and can be upgraded with a Keyless Entry System, which allows you to arm/disarm the TDS and lock/unlock doors from up to 30 feet away.

    COMFORT

The door opens, inviting you over its conveniently low sill to check out the interior. Go ahead, slip it on like a glove. As you nestle into the supportive bolstered seats, you'll find your hip-point cradled way low, making you a more organic part of the vehicle.

Look around. The Supra wraps you in the instrument cluster -- jet fighter-like -- for maximum control and input. And with the precisely weighted switches clustered on the door armrest, you can easily check your power windows and door locks.

Now reach down with your right hand. The shift lever fits naturally for short, positive throws. Release the brake and step on the gas. If you're driving a Supra Turbo, the 4-speed automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) will "learn" to vary the shift points according to your driving demands. And a simple touch of a button activates manual shifting at your pace. In other words, the Supra gives you total control.

    STYLING

Born to run, this precise blend of Group C racer and classic sports car hails from years of Toyota black tire stripes on the raceways of two continents. In other words, guys who race for a living helped us design the Supra. The result? The Supra looks like it was carved by a wind tunnel. Its aerodynamic drag coefficient is a mere 0.31 (0.32 for Turbo), thanks to features like these:

  • Low air intake/radiator opening below the bumper
  • Aerodynamic underbody panels
  • Flush-mounted glass
  • Steeply raked windshield and backlight
  • Tapered rear quarter panels
  • Smooth wheel arches
  • Rear spoiler

Let's talk about that spoiler, which comes standard on 15th Anniversary Limited Edition models. It's made of a revolutionary hollow-bead resin that's 20 percent lighter than conventional material, and it helps optimize weight distribution and generate up to 60 pounds of downforce for added high-speed stability.

Likewise, both the front and side scoops are functional as well as aesthetic, channeling cool air to the brakes for more efficient stopping power.

For pure pleasure purposes, remove the Sport Roof (not available on standard Supras) and tuck it into the rear cargo storage area.

You can also add an available fitted black mask that helps shield the front end from the nicks and dings of minor road grit, polished aluminum wheels or a a Gold Emblem Package accessory featuring a weather-resistant, gold-plated finish.

Finally, this 1997 Supra 15th Anniversary Limited Edition flaunts special badges on the center console and fenders.
